June 22, 2007 - Comics will save the world !!!
One month ago, we were on our way back from Bolivia via São Paulo....
Inside the plane, a very virile man with shoulders like a barn door
crashes into the seat in front of Frédéric. The poor seat
seems to follow the man's every movement, even his breathing...
Everything's fine until "Superman", while bluntly reclining his seat,
puts his big hairy hand on the top of his seat-back, thus hiding
Frédéric's tiny video screen ! Frédéric
informs him of the inconvenience. The man doesn't understand English. I
try to speak in Spanish... Unfortunately, the man is Brazilian and we
don't speak Portuguese ! Frédéric tries body language...
But our man thinks we unfairly ask him to move his seat upright ! He
complies in a very irritated way and tells the story to his wife
sitting next to him ( they are probably thinking : "Damn the French
!!!")
... while putting his hand back on Frédéric's screen.
On the verge of a diplomatic crisis, a brilliant idea strikes me : with a pen I do the following drawing :

| The man understands instantly, shows the drawing
to his wife who laughs along. He turns around, and with a large smile
he performs a gesture that means in almost every language : "Thumbs up,
baby !" and we laugh and everyone is reconciled just like in the feast
at the end of each Astérix book. |
